Kostelić, 31, did enough in the second Kvitfjell downhill to take an unassailable lead over Cuche in the overall World Cup standings. Kostelić, the brother of retired women's alpine legend Janica, had started the season aiming to win his maiden overall title and reinforced his bid in the New Year when he won seven out of 14 races. Congratulations to a marvelous season Ivica… John Isner was up to his tricks again as he and Marin Cilic played a long 5 setter.
Isner was the first to falter however as Cilic passed through 4-6, 6-2, 6-7, 7-6, 9-7. Cilic will now play Rafael Nadal in the fourth round provided that the Spaniard survives the challenge posed by young Australian Bernard Tomic. Cilic, who has been on poor form for several months, made the semifinals of last year's Australian Open but he really faded in the latter parts of 2010. Even if he's at his best in the next round, he's not likely to best Nadal although Cilic promises to be a better challenger than what Rafa has faced so far.
Croatia has won a gold medal at the World Rowing Championships in New Zealand, as David Sain, Martin Sinkovic, Damir Martin and Valent Sinkovic won the quadruple sculls final. (1.Croatia 6:15.78, 2.Italy 6:17.04, 3.Australia 6:18.93, 4.Germany 6:19.53, 5.Great Britain 6:26.23, 6.Russia 6:34.90) By Nik Posa
The Croatian men's quadruple scull crew, David Sain, Martin Sinkovic, Damir Martin and Valent Sinkovic have made an early impression on the second day of the 2010 World Rowing Championships at Lake Karapiro in New Zealand, winning their heat and qualifying directly for Friday's final. The crew, trained by Nikola Bralic, showed their talent by achieving the fastest time of the day, only five seconds short of a world record. The Croatian single sculler Mario Vekic will race again on Thursday for a place in either the C or D final, after failing to qualify for the elite semi-finals placing third in his heat and fifth in Tuesday's repechage (a second chance to qualify for the fastest non-qualifiers). Vekic's time in the heat of 7'00"45 was his best time this year, however a disappointing row in the repechage means he will not place in the top half of the field. Sonya Keserac and Maja Anic in the women's pair have a chance to progress to the finals, but will need a much improved performance in Wednesday's repechage after finishing fifth in their heat. The pair, trained by Kresimir Izakovic, recently won bronze at the European Championships. By Nik Posa |
