ivicaCroatia's Ivica Kostelić claimed the men's overall World Cup crown after pushing Swiss rival Didier Cuche out of mathematical contention for the title at the men's downhill here Saturday.

Kostelić, 31, did enough in the second Kvitfjell downhill to take an unassailable lead over Cuche in the overall World Cup standings.

Kostelić, the brother of retired women's alpine legend Janica, had started the season aiming to win his maiden overall title and reinforced his bid in the New Year when he won seven out of 14 races.

Congratulations to a marvelous season Ivica…

John Isner was up to his tricks again as he and Marin Cilic played a long 5 setter.

marin-cilicMarin Cilic is back into the 4th round of a Grand Slam as he defeated American John Isner in their third round match from Melbourne Park on Saturday. Both players are strong servers and it's not surprising that break points opportunities were at a premium late in this one.

Isner was the first to falter however as Cilic passed through 4-6, 6-2, 6-7, 7-6, 9-7.

Cilic will now play Rafael Nadal in the fourth round provided that the Spaniard survives the challenge posed by young Australian Bernard Tomic.

Cilic, who has been on poor form for several months, made the semifinals of last year's Australian Open but he really faded in the latter parts of 2010. Even if he's at his best in the next round, he's not likely to best Nadal although Cilic promises to be a better challenger than what Rafa has faced so far.

rowing-goldCroatia´s rowing team wins gold in New Zealand

Croatia has won a gold medal at the World Rowing Championships in New Zealand, as David Sain, Martin Sinkovic, Damir Martin and Valent Sinkovic won the quadruple sculls final.

The Croatians had expected strong competition in the final from Germany, Great Britain and Australia, however it was the Italians who took advantage of a more favourable lane allocation in the windy conditions on Lake Karapiro to lead the race at the halfway stage. The Nikola Bralic trained Croatian crew, who are the current Under 23 World Champions, combined endurance, strength and technique over the last 500 metres of the race, to pull ahead of Italy and win their first senior World title, providing Croatia with it's first gold medal at the World Championships since 1994. Italy placed second with Australia third.

(1.Croatia 6:15.78, 2.Italy 6:17.04, 3.Australia 6:18.93, 4.Germany 6:19.53, 5.Great Britain 6:26.23, 6.Russia 6:34.90)

In the B final of the women's pair, Sonya Keserac and Maja Anic gave a stellar performance and came int second behind Romania. The Kresimir Izakovic trained crew finished the regatta ranked eighth in the world, and have made good progress this year as they continue their preparations for the London Olympics in 2012. The winners of the A final were New Zealand.

Mario Vekic placed fourth in the C final of the men's single sculls, effectively ranking him 16th out of a very competitive field of 23. The winner of the A final was Ondrej Synek of the Czech Republic.

rowingGood start for Croatian rowing team in New Zealand

The Croatian men's quadruple scull crew, David Sain, Martin Sinkovic, Damir Martin and Valent Sinkovic have made an early impression on the second day of the 2010 World Rowing Championships at Lake Karapiro in New Zealand, winning their heat and qualifying directly for Friday's final.

The crew, trained by Nikola Bralic, showed their talent by achieving the fastest time of the day, only five seconds short of a world record.

The Croatian single sculler Mario Vekic will race again on Thursday for a place in either the C or D final, after failing to qualify for the elite semi-finals placing third in his heat and fifth in Tuesday's repechage (a second chance to qualify for the fastest non-qualifiers).

Vekic's time in the heat of 7'00"45 was his best time this year, however a disappointing row in the repechage means he will not place in the top half of the field.

Sonya Keserac and Maja Anic in the women's pair have a chance to progress to the finals, but will need a much improved performance in Wednesday's repechage after finishing fifth in their heat. The pair, trained by Kresimir Izakovic, recently won bronze at the European Championships.
