Top of my report is a BIG THANK YOU to all of those ladies, so many, who responded to the League's request for cakes, slices, biscuits and muffins to cover the three days of the biggest tournament our Croatian community has ever hosted in New Zealand. The supply poured in. You did us proud - and we fed them well ! Your efforts went out the door like 'hot cakes'!!
Once again, thank you all.
A special thank you also to all of you who helped to make the Miss Croatia Luncheon, on Friday 1st October at Soljans in Kumeu, a successful event. For many of our ladies, and certainly for the 14 Miss Croatia contestants, this day was one of the highlights. It was a relaxed afternoon in a lovely setting with a superb selection of salads, crispy fish and tender beef - followed by chocolate gateau, lemon cheesecake and a delightful fruit salad garnished with pomegranate!
Our visitors were also able to indulge in the large selection of wines from Soljans vineyard and the many excellent souvenirs and cosmetics on display. We have to thank Soljans for their special attention, which made the occasion an exceptional experience. During the luncheon we were delighted to have the opportunity to meet the Miss Croatia contestants and hear a brief introduction from each of them. The Ambassaddor's wife, Mrs Josipa Buik, was our guest at the Luncheon.
After the lunch, on the return journey by coach to the Croatian Club, our Australian visitors were taken on a detour along the Scenic Drive to the Arataki Centre and Lookout. From here, at the top of the Waitakeres, they were able to have a short break and see the fantastic view of Auckland city nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Tasman Sea - as well as browse through the splendid museum with its displays of native plants and animals.
I gather from the reports I have received that the tournament was a huge success, and our 1000 plus visitors enjoyed their stay. Our Croatian community had two Women's teams in the Tournament: Central United Women and Auckland Croatia - who won their first game, 3-0 against Dalmacija Sydney on Friday. Central United Women also won their game 5-0 against Dalmacija Sydney, on the Saturday morning. Our girls put up a good effort, however they were ultimately beaten and the tournament final saw North Geelong Croatia winning the Women's Trophy 2-0 against Canberra Croatia.
